Our view on gaming and the gaming industry
Entertainment and computer games are mentioned more and
more often in the finer business circles. The gaming
culture has grown substantially since the eighties, and
when it comes to total turnover computer games are now on
par with Hollywood or the music industry. That all of this
translates into enormous business opportunities is now
becoming apparent to a lot of people outside the gaming
community. What´s even more interesting is the fact that
ggames and interactive entertainment are among the few products that can actually be profitable in an online setting. Two
good examples are the gaming worlds of Ultima Online and
Everquest, Everquest, both of which engage hundreds of thousands of users, each
paying 10 dollars a month for access to the system.
We don´t see ourselves as part of either the traditional,
PC-based gaming culture, or as part of the new mobile
gaming industry. PC-based games are largely a one-player
experience, and their playability fades after a few
weeks or months of use. The strictly mobile games offered
today are hampered by similar restraints. They lack the
prerequisites for long-lived communities among players, and
are dependent on heavy marketing and quick revenues
before
their novelty dies away. Hattrick is the opposite: we
market ourselves exclusively through our existing users.
And we offer a continuing user experience over several
years, with a steady evolution in gameplay and community-
building. Around this core, we offer added value services,
applications and competitions.
The gaming philosophy of ExtraLives stems from the Play by mail-culture. PBM games used multiplayer mechanics long before the PC era or the breakthrough of the Internet. However,
the web proved to be the perfect place for the PBM
philosophy to develop into something even more interactive
and addictive. Games are open-ended, and are driven by
player interactions, not by computerised opponents that
often fail to surprise or challenge the user.
